Adorye Urges Government to Secure Fuel Supply Amid Global Tensions

Director of Field Operations for the United Party, Hopeson Adorye, has called on government to prioritise steady fuel supply to avoid shortages and long queues.

Speaking on AM Show on April 7, he stressed the need to maintain adequate fuel reserves, especially as rising tensions involving Israel, Iran and the United States threaten global energy stability.

He noted that disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz have raised concerns about supply shortages and price volatility.

Mr Adorye warned that fuel availability should take priority over price reductions. “We don’t need to queue for fuel. Government must ensure there is enough in the system,” he said, adding that cheaper fuel would be meaningless if it is not accessible.

He cautioned that shortages could lead to black-market activities and increased public frustration.

Referencing assurances from the National Petroleum Authority (NPA), he said Ghana currently has about five to six weeks of fuel reserves, expressing cautious optimism about the country’s position.

Mr Adorye also attributed some price stability to the relative strength of the cedi against the US dollar, noting that currency gains have helped contain fuel prices.

He urged Ghanaians to remain hopeful for a resolution to the conflict, which he said would ease pressure on global fuel markets.

On calls to scrap the one-cedi fuel levy, Mr Adorye advised against it, explaining that the levy supports crude oil purchases for power generation and helps sustain electricity supply.

He warned that removing it could strain the energy sector and risk renewed power outages.
