Unpaid Teachers Threaten Indefinite Protest at Finance Ministry Over Salary Arrears On April 15

The Coalition of Unpaid Teachers has threatened to embark on an indefinite protest at the Ministry of Finance, beginning Wednesday, April 15, 2026, over prolonged salary arrears.

The group says the planned demonstration will go ahead if the government fails to present a clear and binding payment plan.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Top Story, the coalition’s National Organiser, Eugene Zoranu Segbefia, revealed that some members have worked for between seven and 18 months without pay.

“We have teachers who have worked between seven and 18 months without salaries. As we speak, we don’t even know whether the government will fulfil its obligation to us,” he said.

He explained that despite several engagements with authorities, including the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education, no definite timeline has been provided for the payment of arrears.

According to him, although assurances were given that efforts were underway— including the exchange of a memo between the Education and Finance Ministries— teachers are yet to see any concrete results.

“We are only seeing recruitment ongoing, while those of us already working have not been paid,” he added.

Mr Segbefia questioned the rationale behind recruiting new teachers when existing staff have not received their salaries, describing the situation as unfair and demoralising.

“We are already in the classrooms working, yet we are not being paid. Why recruit more teachers when you cannot even pay those already in the system?” he asked.

He further expressed frustration over what he described as unequal treatment, noting that other public sector workers, including nurses, are receiving their arrears.

“Are we not also providing essential services to this country?” he queried.

The coalition had earlier given the government up to April 12 to present a payment plan, but says no response has been received.

As a result, the group says it will escalate its actions from April 15, with members prepared for a prolonged protest.

“Tomorrow, we are hitting the streets, and we are not leaving anytime soon,” Mr Segbefia declared.

He added that the group is demanding direct engagement with President John Dramani Mahama, the Vice President, or the Chief of Staff, insisting that the protest will continue until a clear payment roadmap is provided.

Members, he disclosed, are prepared to remain at the Ministry of Finance premises for as long as it takes.

“We are coming with our belongings. Some colleagues are travelling from Kumasi and Tamale. We are prepared to sleep at the Ministry until we get a payment plan,” he said.
