BOST Warns of GH₵40 Million Monthly Loss as Diesel Margin Suspension Threatens Key Infrastructure Projects

The Bulk Oil Storage and Transportation Company Limited (BOST) is projected to lose nearly GH₵40 million in April following the government’s suspension of its margin on diesel, according to Deputy Managing Director Nat Salifu Acheampong.

In an interview with JoyNews on Monday, April 20, Mr. Acheampong clarified that while the margin on petrol remains in place, its removal on diesel poses significant financial and operational challenges. He noted that the measure is expected to be temporary but urged Parliament of Ghana to support the company’s position.

A central concern is the potential disruption to BOST’s infrastructure expansion plans, particularly the planned upgrade of the Accra–Akosombo pipeline. The existing six-inch pipeline is intended to be replaced with a 12-inch line to enhance capacity and improve nationwide fuel distribution efficiency. According to Mr. Acheampong, the BOST margin is a critical funding source for such projects, and its prolonged suspension could stall these developments.

He emphasized the financial gravity of the situation, stating that a monthly loss of GH₵40 million would significantly impair the company’s operations if sustained. Over time, such losses could undermine BOST’s ability to maintain strategic fuel reserves and invest in essential infrastructure.

Mr. Acheampong therefore appealed for the restoration of the diesel margin once current economic pressures subside, stressing that the levy is vital to fulfilling BOST’s mandate in the national interest.

The BOST margin, applied to petroleum products, is designed to support the company’s role in ensuring fuel security and maintaining critical storage and transportation infrastructure. Its suspension on diesel forms part of broader government efforts to mitigate rising fuel costs for consumers.
