The Akim Swedru Circuit Court in the Birim South District of Ghana’s Eastern Region has fined 37-year-old Emmanuel Oppong Krah GH¢2,400 for making derogatory and false statements against the Member of Parliament for Akim Oda, Alexander Akwasi Acquah.
In addition to the fine, the court ordered Krah, a security officer at Sentuo Oil Refinery, to sign a bond of good behaviour for three years. He faces a three-year custodial sentence if he fails to pay the fine.
Krah pleaded guilty to three charges: offensive conduct conducive to a breach of the peace, publication of false news, and threat of death.
Presenting the case, Police Chief Inspector Samuel Delight Yeboah told the court, presided over by Akosua Atta Nyarko, that on March 14, 2026, at approximately 1501 hours, the accused published offensive and false statements on a WhatsApp platform known as “Hot Issues.”
According to the prosecution, Krah made disparaging remarks about the MP, criticising his public speech in demeaning terms. He further alleged that radio stations owned by the legislator were engaged in illegal electricity connections and had failed to settle power bills.
The statements, prosecutors said, circulated widely within the community, generating public concern and disaffection.
A complaint was subsequently filed with the Akim Oda Police by Mr. Maxwell Anti, General Manager of the radio stations, who was also accused of bribing officials of the Electricity Company of Ghana.
Investigations, including consultations with officials of the Electricity Company of Ghana, established that the allegations were unfounded.
Krah was arrested on April 17, 2026, and later arraigned, where he was convicted on his own plea.
