Pentecost Church Right to Flag Galamsey Threat – Awula Serwaa

Awula Serwaa, Coordinator of Eco-Conscious Citizens

The Coordinator of Eco-Conscious Citizens, Awula Serwaa, has backed the Church of Pentecost (CoP) over its concerns on the environmental harm caused by illegal mining, known as galamsey, while faulting comments from Ghana Free Zones Authority Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Dr. Mavis Awusi.

The issue arose after Church of Pentecost Chairman, Apostle Eric Nyamekye (PhD), told the Church’s General Council Meeting about galamsey’s severe impact on rivers, noting that some communities now use artificial pools for baptism because of contamination.

Replying, Dr. Awusi called the Church’s concerns politically driven, a stance that has drawn public criticism.

Speaking on The Big Issue on Saturday, April 25, Awula Serwaa dismissed that claim, insisting the Church was justified in raising environmental matters.

She pointed to areas where bold local leaders and faith-based advocacy have helped stop illegal mining, stressing that religious groups have a moral duty to safeguard the environment.

“The church should be at the forefront of the battle against illegal mining. I know a few men of God who have spoken about this matter, but we need to be consistent.

“For example, Gyema in the Aowin District is the only community that has no mining there, and that is first of all because of the visionary chief and also because of Father J.B, a Catholic Priest and Community Champion, mobilising the people and talking about the care for creation.“

The Church of Pentecost is free to speak and has every right to talk about the environment. I did not think it was hypocritical at all. They were right, they have to speak out. Everybody should speak out, especially those who make a claim to godliness. I am glad they have spoken out, and I am a bit surprised at the response,” she said.
