The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has suspended his planned “Thank You Tour” of the North East Region following escalating security concerns linked to a recent attack on a military convoy in the Bawku area.
A senior member of the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) confirmed that the decision was reached after consultations amid a deteriorating security environment, particularly after reports of an altercation in Binduri, where unidentified assailants targeted a military escort convoy.
The suspension affects the two-day itinerary scheduled for April 29 and 30. The tour was set to begin with visits to Yagaba, Walewale, and Nalerigu, before continuing to Bunkpurugu, Yunyoo, and Chereponi.
According to the REGSEC source, security agencies advised against proceeding with the visit as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of the NDC National Chairman, party supporters, and the general public.
The source noted that disturbances in one area can have broader implications, making it necessary to avoid the trip while efforts are directed toward addressing the underlying security challenges.
The “Thank You Tour” forms part of Mr. Asiedu Nketiah’s post-election engagements aimed at expressing appreciation to party supporters across the region for their contributions. Its suspension has reportedly disappointed supporters in the affected constituencies who had anticipated the Chairman’s visit.
The Bawku enclave has experienced recurring instability in recent times, with the latest attack on military personnel further heightening tensions and prompting increased security vigilance across parts of the North East and Upper East regions.
The NDC leadership has yet to announce new dates for the tour. In the meantime, residents and party supporters have been urged to remain calm as authorities continue to monitor the situation.
