The General Secretary of the Christian Council of Ghana, Cyril Fayose, has cautioned against calls to dismiss Mary Awusi from her position, advocating a measured and proportionate response to recent controversy surrounding her remarks about the church.

Speaking on PM Express on Joy News, Rev. Fayose acknowledged the seriousness of the incident but argued that it should not warrant removal from office. His comments follow a public apology by Dr Awusi to Eric Nyamekye, Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, over remarks linked to discussions on illegal mining (galamsey).

The issue drew further attention after Julius Debrah, Chief of Staff, issued a public apology to church leadership.

Rev. Fayose stressed that a Christian response should emphasise grace, accountability, and the opportunity for reform. While supporting calls for stronger institutional signals, he stopped short of endorsing dismissal, noting that corrective measures should be firm yet proportionate.

He argued that the government must clearly distance itself from the conduct in question while applying appropriate disciplinary action. According to him, a strong reprimand would suffice, as the incident should be treated as a learning process rather than grounds for termination.

He further questioned whether the Chief of Staff’s apology alone adequately addresses the issue, calling for an internal directive to reinforce standards of conduct within public office. Without such action, he warned, the apology risks being perceived as merely symbolic.

Rev. Fayose also addressed broader perceptions of religious leadership, cautioning against generalisations. He noted that while a small minority of clergy may engage in problematic behaviour, it is important to hold individuals accountable without attributing such conduct to the entire religious community.
