President John Dramani Mahama has commended the Volta River Authority (VRA) for its swift response to the recent fire outbreak at the Akosombo control room, describing the incident as an opportunity to upgrade the ageing facility.
During a visit to the Akosombo Dam on April 30 to assess damage and recovery efforts, he expressed concern over the incident but praised engineers for restoring power generation promptly.
“We heard about the sad event… and of course, Ghanaians have felt the impact,” he said, adding that the authority’s response reflected strong technical capacity.
Mr Mahama noted that the facility’s age made the incident unexpected, describing it as an unfortunate but transformative moment. He stated that the fire presents an opportunity to replace the control room with a more modern system capable of serving future generations.
He disclosed that recovery efforts are progressing, with four turbines already operational and work underway to restore the remaining two. Further improvements are expected in the coming days.
The President commended VRA staff and partners for their efforts and reaffirmed government support for the institution, alongside the Ghana Grid Company, as key pillars of the country’s power sector.
