The Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts has stated that it neither approved nor authorised the recently held Karnival Kingdom Festival in Accra.
In a statement dated May 7 and signed by the sector Minister, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, the Ministry explained that organisers of the event failed to officially engage the Ministry or seek the required approval before staging the programme.
According to the statement, the Ministry did not receive any formal proposal, application or communication regarding the festival and therefore had no involvement in endorsing, supporting or facilitating the event.
The Ministry said the clarification became necessary following widespread public discussion and criticism on social media over certain activities associated with the festival.
It noted that concerns expressed by members of the public and key stakeholders prompted the Ministry to publicly clarify its position on the matter.
The statement further emphasised that organisers of tourism, entertainment and cultural events in Ghana are expected to follow established regulatory procedures and obtain the necessary authorisations from relevant state institutions before hosting such programmes.
Reaffirming its mandate, the Ministry stressed its commitment to promoting tourism and cultural activities that reflect Ghanaian values, comply with national laws and uphold standards of public decency.
The Karnival Kingdom Festival attracted significant public attention after its debut edition in Accra sparked mixed reactions online. While some participants commended the event for its energetic carnival atmosphere, music and nightlife experience, others, including religious groups and some Catholic bishops, criticised aspects of the programme and called for investigations into activities linked to the event.
Despite the controversy, organisers are reported to have commenced pre-sales for the 2027 edition, which is expected to feature carnival parades, jouvert celebrations, themed parties and other entertainment activities targeted at both local and international audiences.
