The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting and protecting press freedom in Ghana.
According to the GJA President, Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, “We shall continue to protect and promote press freedom even more than we have done before.”
Marking World Press Freedom Day on Saturday, May 3, 2025, he called for justice for murdered journalist, Ahmed Suale, urging the Inspector General of Police to act swiftly, “The Time To Act Is Now!”
The GJA, he said, has taken concrete steps to defend press freedom, including blacking out some politicians and taking legal actions.
The association has also established a Journalists Support Fund to address media freedom and welfare matters, he added.
While advocating press freedom, the GJA President emphasised the importance of responsibility, stating, “Freedoms and rights are not absolute, and that they go with responsibility. We should all appreciate the fact that freedoms and rights are not absolute, and that they go with responsibility.”
Mr. Dwumfour warned that GJA will not condone irresponsible practices in the media, thereby, encouraging all stakeholders to work together to build a free, vibrant, and resilient media landscape.
“The promotion of press freedom is not the burden of only media practitioners; it is also the responsibility of all.”
