The Ghana Police Service has arrested six private security guards in connection with the shooting incident that left former Dome-Kwabenya Member of Parliament, Sarah Adwoa Safo, injured at Kwabenya in the Greater Accra Region on Sunday.
The arrests followed an intensive police operation after the former Gender, Children and Social Protection Minister reported sustaining a gunshot injury to her left ear while visiting the residence of her late father, Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka.
In an initial statement issued by the Accra Regional Public Affairs Unit on Sunday, June 21, the police disclosed that preliminary investigations indicated that Adwoa Safo sustained the injury while visiting her late father’s residence at Kwabenya. The former legislator subsequently reported the matter to the Kwabenya Police and presented a vehicle bearing registration number GN 3482-24, which had visible gunshot damage.
Police said she was issued with a Police Medical Report Form and was receiving medical attention, while the damaged vehicle was retained for forensic examination.
However, in a subsequent update issued later the same day, the Ghana Police Service announced a major breakthrough in the investigation with the arrest of six private security guards allegedly connected to the incident.
According to the police, a search conducted following the arrests led to the retrieval of a cache of weapons and ammunition from the suspects.
The exhibits recovered included five pump-action guns, one Taurus pistol loaded with seven rounds of 9mm ammunition, an additional magazine loaded with five rounds of 9mm ammunition, as well as communication equipment.
Police said preliminary investigations revealed that personnel from the National Operations Directorate and the Intelligence Directorate, who were on special duty, responded to a distress call from a residence at Kwabenya and proceeded to the scene.
Investigators subsequently established that a ceremony was being held at the residence of Mr. Tamakloe Safo Jehoshaphat, also known as Akofena, when Adwoa Safo reportedly arrived and requested access to the premises.
According to the police statement, she was denied entry.
The situation is alleged to have escalated thereafter, with police investigations indicating that armed security personnel at the residence discharged firearms during the incident.
Police believe the gunfire resulted in the injury sustained by Adwoa Safo and also caused multiple gunshot damage to her vehicle.
“The Ghana Police Service has arrested six private security guards in connection with the shooting incident involving Hon. Sarah Adwoa Safo,” the statement said.
The police further disclosed that both the suspects and the recovered weapons have been transferred to the Police Headquarters to assist ongoing investigations.
Authorities say efforts are underway to identify and arrest all other persons who may have played a role in the incident.
The development marks a significant turn in what initially appeared to be a straightforward shooting investigation but has now evolved into a major security probe involving armed personnel and the discharge of firearms at a private residence.
The incident has generated widespread public attention due to Adwoa Safo’s political profile and her connection to the influential Safo family.
Adwoa Safo served as Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya and was a Cabinet Minister under the administration of former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. She is also the daughter of the late Apostle Kwadwo Safo Kantanka, founder of the Kantanka Group and leader of the Christ Reformed Church.
With six suspects already in custody and several firearms recovered, investigators are expected to focus on determining who ordered the armed action, the circumstances under which the weapons were discharged, and whether additional criminal offences were committed.
Police have assured the public that investigations remain active and that all persons connected to the incident will be brought to justice.
