President John Dramani Mahama says his government remains committed to putting Ghanaians first and safeguarding the country’s democracy in honour of the late President John Evans Atta Mills.
Speaking at a wreath-laying ceremony at Asomdwee Park in Accra to mark 14 years since Prof. Mills’ death, President Mahama said his time as Vice President under Mills shaped how he leads today.
He pointed to principles such as honesty, national unity, and public service as lasting influences. “As I carry out the duties Ghanaians have given me, I often think of his calm wisdom and measured approach. Those lessons keep reminding me that every choice I make must benefit the people of Ghana and protect institutions that will last beyond our time,” he said.
President Mahama noted that remembering the late President goes beyond yearly events. According to him, the true tribute lies in living out the values Mills championed. He listed integrity in governance, respect for democratic structures, openness to different opinions, care for the vulnerable and inclusive development as the core of Prof. Mills’ leadership.
The President added that Mills’ vision of a peaceful, fair and thriving Ghana is still being built, and he is determined to continue that work.“His aspiration for a peaceful, just and prosperous Ghana is still unfolding. I pledge to Prof. Mills that I will keep following the path he set for us,” he stated.
