Ghanaian highlife artiste Kuami Eugene has expressed concerns about the cedi’s recent appreciation against the dollar, appealing to President John Dramani Mahama to slow down the trend. “We beg Pres. John Mahama for slow down small, my dollar reserves all dey go waste,” he wrote on social media, adding that he’s “happy and sad at the same time” about the cedi’s performance.
On the other hand, Ghanaian actor Van Vicker has praised President Mahama for stabilizing the cedi, congratulating him on the currency’s strengthening against the dollar. “Mr. President, I must congratulate you on the strengthening of the Ghana cedis on the world market. Ayekoo,” he wrote on Facebook.
Van Vicker believes the cedi’s appreciation is remarkable and sustainable, urging Ghanaians to acknowledge the President’s efforts. “Give credit to whom credit is due,” he said, adding that doubters might be motivated by politics rather than economic reality. According to him, the current exchange rate of approximately GH₵11 to $1 is a notable achievement, especially considering the rate was around GH₵17 to $1 just a few months ago.
