The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Bernard Ahiafor, has advised the Minority to seek court intervention over the detention of NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi). Wontumi is being held by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) on allegations of fraud and money laundering.
The Minority staged a walkout and sit-down protest at EOCO’s headquarters, accusing the agency of unfair treatment and political bias. Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin criticized EOCO’s handling of the case and called for solidarity from the Majority.
However, Ahiafor urged the Minority to pursue legal remedies, emphasising that Parliament lacks authority to intervene in EOCO’s bail procedures. “If a security agency sets bail conditions you feel are harsh, it’s for the courts to address, not Parliament,” he said, stressing the importance of respecting institutional boundaries and due process.
