Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah has maintained his criticism of the state of Ghanaian football, insisting that the game has “collapsed under Kurt Okraku’s administration”.

In his first interview since his public disagreement with the Ghana Football Association (GFA) president, Nana Baffour Awuah told Luv FM that Mr Okraku must take steps to address the situation or risk government intervention.

“Football is the passion of the nation, so when things are not going well, we have to say it,” he said.

The MP cited what he described as poor performances and challenges across Ghana’s football development structure, including the national youth teams and domestic league.

“When the source of a river is dried, you have no river. You’re not doing well at U17, U20, and U23, and your domestic league is not doing well,” he said.

“The quantity is very poor; everybody knows. Under Okraku, Ghana’s football has collapsed, and he has to, or we, as a nation, do something about it,” he added.

Mr Okraku has served as president of the GFA since 2019.

The disagreement between the two men followed comments by Nana Baffour Awuah urging President John Dramani Mahama to reform Ghanaian football. The MP also accused the GFA of being controlled by a “cabal”.

Mr Okraku subsequently responded on radio, questioning the MP’s expertise in football administration and asking how many football pitches he had constructed for his constituents in Manhyia South in the Ashanti Region.

Nana Baffour Awuah rejected that argument, saying his constituency already has three AstroTurf pitches.

He maintained that the discussion should go beyond individual infrastructure projects and focus on the broader challenges confronting Ghanaian football.
