The Ghana National Ambulance Service in the Greater Accra Region is facing a critical shortage of ambulances, with only 42 vehicles available to serve the entire region. According to Joyce Avadzinu, Head of Dispatch, this limited fleet is forcing dispatchers to ration emergency responses.
Due to the shortage, dispatchers are often compelled to prioritize severe cases, such as road traffic accidents or sudden collapses, while less critical cases may be delayed. Avadzinu explained that dispatchers work closely with ambulance stations to coordinate responses and ensure availability for critical situations.
“We’re managing with what we have,” Avadzinu said, highlighting the challenges faced by the ambulance service. “We try to keep some ambulances on standby for severe emergencies, while managing other cases as best we can.”
