The newly appointed CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Dr. Ken Ashigbey, has reiterated his unwavering commitment to combating illegal mining, known locally as galamsey. Despite his new role, Dr. Ashigbey’s stance on galamsey remains resolute, and he vows to leverage his position to promote responsible and sustainable mining practices.
As the Convener of the Media Coalition Against Galamsey, Dr. Ashigbey emphasised that his leadership role at the Chamber will only strengthen his resolve to push for industry-wide reforms. “There is an alignment between the Chamber of itself and ensuring that Ghana mines sustainably,” he noted. “So, I am not sure that much will change. I am just hoping that my colleagues on the Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey would also step up to the plate and take some of the responsibility.”
Dr. Ashigbey revealed that his new role will provide greater opportunities to influence industry players and coordinate more impactful engagements. “The only thing that you might see happening a lot more is that by virtue of the opportunities given to me, a lot of the engagement with the stakeholders will be using the Chamber as the vehicle,” he explained.
The Chamber will now serve as a strategic platform for stakeholder dialogue and advocacy, further solidifying Dr. Ashigbey’s commitment to sustainable mining practices. With his unyielding stance on galamsey, Dr. Ashigbey is poised to drive meaningful change in the industry.
