Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, says the Ministry and the Ghana Education Service (GES) will pursue full administrative and legal action in the alleged sexual abuse of 19 girls at Obuasi Senior High Technical School.
The school’s headmaster, Zakaria Abdulai, has been suspended over the allegations.
Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, October 26, Mr. Iddrisu assured the public that the case will not be swept under the carpet and that government will act to protect students.
“The primary essence of this press briefing is to assure the Ghanaian public that the Ministry of Education and the GES will do everything appropriate to safeguard and ensure the protection of all students as a statutory duty. We would not fail in this endeavour,” he said.
The Minister said trauma-informed support will be provided for the 19 affected students. He has also directed the Director-General of GES to ensure no student is made to perform domestic chores for any headmaster or teacher and announced a review of school regulations to strengthen child protection systems.
According to him, the Ministry will intensify monitoring of teachers and headteachers and engage parents and students to close existing safeguarding gaps.
