More than 60,000 teachers across Ghana have successfully completed the three-day Ghana Education Service (GES) promotion exercise, marking a significant step towards expanding career advancement opportunities within the education sector.
The exercise ended on Wednesday, November 5, with monitoring officers reporting a generally smooth and incident-free process at examination centres nationwide.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, the GES said the exercise was particularly significant as it marked a major milestone in the implementation of its policy to separate professional ranks from administrative positions.
The statement, signed by the Service’s Public Relations Officer, Daniel Fenyi, explained that the policy was designed to broaden career progression opportunities and ensure that qualified teachers were not restricted by the limited availability of administrative positions.
Director ranks see significant increase
Under the new arrangement, the number of teachers eligible to attain the rank of Director II is expected to increase by 1,500 per cent, while those advancing to Director I will see an increase of 340 per cent.
The policy is also expected to facilitate significant growth in the number of teachers progressing through other professional ranks, including Principal Superintendent (PS), Assistant Director II (ADII), Assistant Director I (ADI) and Deputy Director (DD).
The GES described the changes as a major shift in the Service’s career progression framework, placing greater emphasis on professional competence, experience and continued service rather than the availability of administrative vacancies.
It said, as was the case in the previous year, deliberate measures had been introduced to ensure that deserving staff could advance to higher professional ranks without being constrained by the number of available positions.
Policy expected to boost teacher motivation
The Service said the revised framework was expected to have far-reaching implications for teacher morale and professional motivation by creating a more inclusive system that recognises teachers’ contributions and professional development.
The policy is intended to ensure that qualified teachers have a fair opportunity to advance in their careers, regardless of whether they occupy administrative positions.
The GES congratulated all teachers who participated in the promotion exercise and wished them success.
It also commended the officers, invigilators, administrators and other stakeholders whose dedication and cooperation contributed to the smooth conduct of the nationwide exercise.
