National Security Cracks Down on Goods Diversion Scheme

National Security Operatives in the Ashanti Region have impounded seven trucks suspected of diverting goods meant for Burkina Faso to Kumasi, evading payment of required duties. The trucks were transporting goods from the Tema Port but were intercepted at Nkawkaw in the Eastern Region and escorted to Kumasi for investigations

According to officials, the drivers claimed the goods were bound for Burkina Faso, but evidence suggests they were being diverted to Kumasi and other parts of the Ashanti Region to avoid taxes. The National Security officials, collaborating with Customs officers, are working to identify the owners of the goods and determine the actual destination.

This recent operation follows a similar incident in May 2025, where National Security operatives intercepted three articulated trucks smuggling over 2,300 gallons of undeclared cooking oil, with tax evasion amounting to over GH¢1 million. The trucks were monitored from Accra to Kumasi, and investigations revealed that duties were paid on only 4,320 gallons out of 6,688 gallons of cooking oil onboard.

Customs officers have taken custody of the impounded trucks, and further investigations are underway to identify individuals connected to the smuggling attempt.
