A former Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA) has credited mining NGO, Wacam, for its relentless, decade-long advocacy for Ghana’s mining communities.
Professor Kenneth Attafuah praised Wacam as a consistent champion for community rights during a discussion on Accra-based Asaase Radio on mining laws and its impact on the country on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.
“I must commend both Wacam of old and new as being one CSO that has consistently championed the rights of mining communities,” he stated.
Contributing to the conversation, Wacam’s Technical Director, Lawyer Kwaku Afari, pinpointed Ghana’s mineral laws as the root cause of irresponsible mining.
He specifically cited the water rights in the Minerals and Mining Act, 2006 (Act 703) as a key enabler of water pollution.
He went on to indicate that a lot of provisions in the Minerals and Mining Act promoted were the cause of the myriad of problems in Ghana’s mining sector.
In a significant consensus, both Prof. Attafuah and Lawyer Afari called for a holistic approach, including a complete, temporary halt to all mining activities.
This pause, they argued, was essential to properly diagnose the sector’s problems and implement effective solutions. 0266266355/0506387470
