A man has been beaten to death in Tamale following a dispute over an unpaid debt for Tramadol, a prescription opioid painkiller.
The victim had allegedly purchased two tablets of Tramadol valued at GH¢50 but failed to settle the payment, leading to a violent confrontation with two suspects, Abubakari Mohammed and Rasheed Sumaila.
According to the leader of the IGP Special Operations Team, DSP Bawah Abdul Jalil, the suspects assaulted the victim and fled the scene after the attack.
Abubakari Mohammed was later arrested along the Accra–Kumasi highway while attempting to escape. Rasheed Sumaila was subsequently apprehended, while three additional individuals — including Sumaila’s father — were arrested for allegedly obstructing police operations during the investigation.
Police say Mohammed admitted during interrogation that the deceased had purchased two tablets of Tramadol (120mg) at GH¢25 each but failed to pay.
DSP Abdul Jalil also disclosed that the special operations team conducted separate swoop operations in the area, resulting in the arrest of six more suspects for possession and sale of suspected Indian hemp and opioids.
The victim’s body has been preserved for autopsy, while exhibits retrieved from the suspects have been retained for forensic examination as investigations continue.
