Ex-ECG Boss Ready To Cooperate In Missing Containers Probe

Samuel Dubik Mahama, former MD, ECG

Former Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Samuel Dubik Mahama, has expressed his willingness to cooperate with any investigative body looking into the disappearance of over 1,300 ECG containers at the Tema Port.

The containers, containing vital equipment for ECG’s operations, were left at the port for an extended period without being cleared, sparking a major scandal.

Mahama’s statement comes after an investigative committee’s report raised serious questions about the handling of the containers. Out of 2,491 containers expected to be cleared and distributed by ECG, 1,357 have been declared missing. Mahama emphasized that the containers were never in ECG’s custody, but rather under the port authorities, and he is ready to provide his side of the story.

The investigative report revealed several concerns. ECG had a dedicated fund for clearing shipments, but it was discontinued due to financial constraints. Despite this, ECG awarded contracts to two firms to clear the containers, one of which was pre-financed by ECG. However, one of the companies lacked the necessary license to handle the contract, raising concerns over procurement violations.

Additionally, ECG’s procurement directorate was merged with its Housing and Estate unit, and the Director of Procurement had no prior experience in procurement and was not a member of any professional procurement body.

Mahama’s cooperation with the investigation is crucial in uncovering the truth behind the missing containers. The scandal has sparked public outrage, and it is essential that those responsible are held accountable.
