Three of the six people who survived Tuesday’s deadly road crash at Potrikrom in the Ashanti Region have been treated and discharged, while the remaining three have been referred for specialised medical care.
The Medical Superintendent of St. Edward Catholic Hospital, Dr Christopher Anane, said the survivors were rushed to the facility shortly after the accident, which has so far claimed 16 lives.
Speaking to Adom News during a visit to the crash scene, Dr Anane explained that three of the victims responded well to treatment and were discharged. The other three, however, required advanced medical attention and were transferred to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and St. John of God Hospital.
“Three have been treated and discharged, while the remaining three have been referred to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital and St. John of God Hospital at Aduankwanta for further medical care,” Dr Anane said.
He also confirmed that the ambulance driver involved in the crash survived but sustained a severe fracture.
“The driver of the ambulance survived but sustained a severe fracture. He has been transferred to Aduankwanta for specialised orthopaedic treatment. He is part of the six survivors,” he added.
According to Dr Anane, the injured victims currently receiving treatment are responding positively.
The accident occurred on Tuesday, March 3, at Potrikrom and involved an ambulance, a trailer and a Ford Transit vehicle. Preliminary reports indicate that the vehicles were travelling from Drobo in the Bono Region when the crash happened.
A resident of Potrikrom, Opanin Kwaku Adu, who witnessed the incident, said the ambulance was speeding with its siren on and attempted to overtake a trailer before colliding head-on with an oncoming Ford Transit vehicle.
Police have since launched investigations to determine the exact cause of the accident.
Meanwhile, distraught families gathered at the hospital mortuary to identify the bodies of their relatives in what witnesses described as a heartbreaking scene.
The tragedy has renewed concerns about road safety and the operation of emergency vehicles on Ghana’s highways, particularly during high-speed emergency responses.
