The Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has condemned the recent attack on Ghanaian peacekeepers serving under the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), describing the incident as unacceptable and a violation of international law.
Speaking on Newsfile on Joy News on Saturday, March 7, the minister said the government of Ghana has formally lodged a complaint with the United Nations and is demanding a full investigation.
“It is a condemnable action, totally unacceptable. It violates all norms of reason and international law,” Mr Kwakye Ofosu said.
He stressed that Ghanaian troops deployed under UN peacekeeping missions are neutral forces working to maintain peace and do not pose any threat to parties involved in the conflict.
According to him, Ghana has participated in international peacekeeping operations for decades and its troops are widely respected for their professionalism.
The minister said the government expects the United Nations to investigate the incident thoroughly and ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
Mr Kwakye Ofosu also dismissed claims that Ghanaian peacekeepers were supporting military actions by the United States or Israel in the ongoing tensions in the Middle East.
He warned that the current situation reflects broader concerns about the weakening of the global rules-based international order.
Despite the tensions, the minister said dialogue remains the best path to resolving the conflict and preventing further escalation in the region.
“We hope that reason will prevail and that this conflict is resolved quickly so that normalcy returns,” he added.
