The Ghana Police Service has dismantled a suspected highway robbery syndicate operating across multiple regions, arresting 12 individuals linked to a series of violent attacks.
The arrests were carried out in coordinated operations on March 12 and 14, 2026, across several towns, including Offinso, Nkenkaasu, Akomadan, Techiman, and Sunyani. The operation involved collaboration between the Ashanti North Regional Command and the Police Intelligence Directorate’s Surveillance Unit in Accra.
Addressing the media at the Regional Police Headquarters in Asante Mampong on March 19, Ashanti North Regional Commander Felix Apedo (ACP) described the suspects as members of a dangerous criminal network responsible for multiple highway robberies.
Among those arrested are Seidu Fuseini, alias Baali, an ex-convict; Dramani Rasak, 22, who is reportedly on bail in a separate murder case in Kumasi; Moro Yakubu, also known as Dogo; and Ibrahim Issiaka, 28, alias Jaaji, who is said to have escaped from police custody at the Jaima Police Station.
Police recovered a cache of weapons from the suspects, including three locally manufactured shotguns, a pistol, nine live BB cartridges, four cutlasses, a sword, and two knives. Officers also seized 41 mobile phones—some already identified by victims—along with phone accessories, black hooded outfits (one stained with blood), and a fertilizer bag allegedly used to conceal weapons.
According to ACP Apedo, the group is linked to a February 23, 2026, robbery on the Nsuta–Hwidiem Old Junction Road, where armed attackers made away with GH¢57,000 and several mobile phones. He further revealed that one suspect, Zakaria Fuseini, initially declined to participate in a robbery due to fasting but later accepted GH¢500 as his share.
The syndicate is also accused of attacking a VIP bus carrying 49 passengers on February 2 along the Nkenkaasu–Darso stretch of the Kumasi–Techiman highway, during which two female passengers sustained gunshot wounds.
Police say the suspects were planning another attack on March 14 along the Akomadan–Darso road, but the operation was thwarted by their arrest on the same day.
Investigations indicate that the group may be responsible for additional crimes, including robberies on the Mampong–Ejura road, incidents at Offinso Kokoti, attacks in Wenchi during the 2025 Sallah festivities, and cattle theft in the Buipe area of the Northern Region. They are also suspected to have been involved in a shootout in Obuasi that resulted in the death of an accomplice.
ACP Apedo confirmed that efforts are ongoing to apprehend two remaining suspects and appealed to the public to provide credible information to support the fight against armed robbery.
