President John Dramani Mahama has been honoured with the International Statesperson Award by the World Affairs Council of Philadelphia, in recognition of his contributions to democratic governance, global leadership, and international diplomacy.
The award, presented at a ceremony on Friday, March 27, 2026, is the Council’s highest distinction. Established in 1973, it is conferred on global figures whose leadership advances peace, freedom, and has a lasting impact on international affairs.
President Mahama’s recognition marks a significant milestone, making him the first African leader to receive the prestigious honour since its inception.
At the ceremony, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Council, Lauren Swartz, praised President Mahama’s leadership, describing his career as one that embodies the principles the award seeks to promote.
She cited his commitment to democratic governance, his role in fostering peaceful political transitions, and his efforts to strengthen international partnerships and drive economic and regional development. She also highlighted his consistent advocacy for Africa on the global stage.
In his acceptance remarks, President Mahama credited his dedication to peace and development to the legacy of Africa’s founding leaders, including Kwame Nkrumah, Nelson Mandela, and Kenneth Kaunda.
He said their vision and sacrifices continue to guide his leadership and commitment to advancing unity, justice, and sustainable development across the continent and beyond.
The honour underscores Ghana’s growing influence in global affairs and reinforces its role in shaping international conversations on governance, diplomacy, and development.
