Ten individuals, including four officers of the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), are being held as investigations continue into suspected drug trafficking through Ghana’s ports.
President John Dramani Mahama was briefed on the development during an urgent meeting with security chiefs on Thursday, September 17, where he received an update on investigations into the trafficking of narcotics out of the country’s ports.
A statement issued by the Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, said, “ten (10) individuals, including four officers of the Customs Division of the GRA, are being held while investigations continue.”
The Presidency did not disclose the identities of those in custody or provide details of the allegations against them. It also did not state whether charges had been filed, noting that investigations are ongoing.
The reported detention of four Customs officers is one of the key developments in the case. However, the statement did not establish any wrongdoing against the officers or the other individuals in custody.
The meeting also reviewed existing structures and security systems designed to prevent drug trafficking and considered additional measures to strengthen controls at Ghana’s borders and ports.
Following the briefing, President Mahama directed the formation of an inter-agency task force to develop a detailed roadmap aimed at preventing the trafficking of drugs through Ghana’s borders.
The task force has been given two weeks to submit its proposals, which will be based on the findings and recommendations from Thursday’s meeting.
