The 11th edition of the Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup has been launched in Accra.

The Ramadan Cup, named in honour of the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, has been a popular community football tournament over the past 10 years which has been bringing together youth from various Zongo communities to participate in a football gala at the end of Ramadan to climax Eid celebration.

The 11th edition was launched in Accra with a call by the National Chief Imam, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu, on the participating teams and the youth to continue to uphold the objectives of the tournament: peace, unity and discipline.

Dr. Abubakar Marzook Azindoo, who represented Sheikh Sharubutu at the launch, conveyed the Chief Imam’s goodwill message to the Zongo community and urged the participating teams and the youth to continue to embrace each other as brothers in line with the tournament’s objective of bringing people together, regardless of their backgrounds.

Lawyer Seidu Nasigri, the legal advisor to the National Chief Imam, also reiterated the Chief Imam’s quest for unity and discipline, urging both organizers and participants to uphold the values of the tournament which, he said, the Chief Imam cherishes highly.

Founder of the Sheikh Sharubutu Ramadan Cup said after 10 editions in the past 11 years, the tournament has achieved its goal of using football as a unifying force to bring communities and the youth together while also honouring the National Chief Imam.

“Our grandfather, Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu is renowned as a champion of peace, togetherness and discipline, and his values reflect the power football so it was fitting to name the tournament after him to inspire all of us,” Tamimu Issah said.

“After 11 years and 10 editions, I can say we have made tremendous impact because we have brought communities together, promoted unity and discipline and we have also created a national platform for so many young people.”
