A Nation That Cheers Loud, But Thinks Small

A Nation That Cheers Loud, But Thinks Small

When Otto Addo is sacked, it dominates headlines, talk shows, and national emotion. When a district chief executive fails to deliver clean water, housing, roads, or sanitation, it barely raises a whisper.

One man loses football matches and is publicly executed in the court of opinion. Another presides over human misery, filth, flooding, joblessness, and remains comfortably invisible.

This is not about football. It is about a society that confuses entertainment with existence.

We react with urgency to missed goals, but tolerate broken systems. We demand accountability for lineups, but not for livelihoods. We debate formations, but ignore formation of policy.

Today, there are thousands of social media platforms made up of the most educated and the jobless who spend the whole day discussing football, yet not a single one is dedicated to community development or job creation. The closest are residents’ association groups, and even those exist out of necessity, not vision.

A country that treats football results as a national emergency but accepts poor governance as normal is not unlucky. It is unserious.

This is not passion. It is misplaced priority.

And a people who consistently prioritise spectacle over survival will always be entertained and permanently underdeveloped.

Kwame Sowu Jr.
