Don’t repeat Aayalolo errors with new buses

A transport specialist, Dr. Elvis Kyere-Gyeabour, has urged that the successful use of the newly acquired 100 minibuses—each seating 29 passengers—on busy routes will be essential to solving the nation’s transit woes.

He warned that authorities must steer clear of the poor oversight that plagued the Aayalolo bus service, launched back in 2015. His remarks follow a statement by Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Minister of State for Government Communications, confirming that 100 brand-new 29-seater buses have arrived in the country to help ease recent public transport difficulties.

In an interview with Citi News which was monitored by Ghanaianradar, Dr. Kyere-Gyeabour stressed that the vehicles need to be deployed wisely, serviced regularly, and managed with openness to achieve the desired effect.

“The key thing we must all watch is how these buses will be allocated, operated, and kept in good condition. Looking back at the discussion on the BRT—which later became the quality bus service—we had close to 300 buses, if not more. In the end, most of them sat parked and idle, out of service. So it’s vital to understand how these new buses will be used: which routes will they run on? How will they be utilized? Will they be owned entirely by state bodies and agencies? Ultimately, it’s the actual deployment that will determine whether they can offer a real fix to the transport crisis we face—not just in Accra but across other urban centres nationwide.”
