The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) has issued a 48-hour ultimatum to traders selling at unauthorised bus stops across the city to vacate or face the law.
In a statement released on Wednesday, November 4, the Assembly said the order forms part of a renewed crackdown to reclaim public spaces and make the roads safer.
Traders who ignore the directive, it warned, will be arrested and prosecuted under the Assembly’s by-laws.
The move comes after the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) and other driver unions threatened to go on strike over hawkers taking over designated bus stops — a practice they say blocks vehicles and pedestrians.
According to the AMA, the takeover of bus stops has deepened traffic jams and pushed passengers to board and alight from vehicles at dangerous spots, putting lives at risk.“
The Mayor of Accra, Hon. Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has already initiated enforcement measures, including the removal of traders occupying unauthorised spaces at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, Achimota and parts of the Central Business District (CBD),” the statement said.
It also warned traders not to return to places already cleared in earlier operations, stressing that anyone caught reoccupying such spaces will face stiffer punishment, including prosecution.
The Assembly said it is determined to restore order, protect lives on the road, and ensure public spaces are used for their intended purpose.
