The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has expressed condolences to Berekum Chelsea following the tragic death of their forward, Dominic Frimpong, and has called for swift justice against those responsible.
Frimpong was confirmed dead after sustaining a gunshot wound during an armed robbery attack on the team’s bus on Sunday night. The club had been returning from a Ghana Premier League fixture against FC Samartex 1996 when the incident occurred.
Reports indicate that the bus was ambushed on the Bibiani–Goaso road by armed assailants who blocked the route, forcing players and officials to abandon the vehicle and flee into nearby bushes. Several individuals sustained injuries during the attack, while Frimpong was reportedly shot in the head.
The 20-year-old, who was on loan from Aduana FC, was rushed to Bibiani Government Hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
In a statement, the GFA described the incident as a profound loss not only to Berekum Chelsea but to Ghanaian football more broadly. The Association indicated that it remains in close contact with the club and relevant authorities, including the Ghana Police Service, as investigations continue. It further urged that all necessary steps be taken to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
The incident has renewed concerns about security on major road networks used by clubs travelling for domestic competitions. In recent years, teams such as FC Savannah, Wa All Stars, Legon Cities, and AshantiGold have reported similar attacks, underscoring persistent safety challenges within the league.
