Workers of the National Identification Authority (NIA) under the Public Services Workers’ Union (PSWU) have confirmed they will go ahead with an indefinite nationwide walkout starting Wednesday, May 13, 2026, ignoring a late request from management for a 14-day delay.
NIA management had urged employees to hold off on the strike and allow the government two more weeks to finalise processes for approving and rolling out migration reports that affect staff members’ conditions.
But in a release on Saturday, May 9, the union’s NIA Division instructed all members across the country to fully observe the action, saying the decision was reached unanimously.
The union stated the move comes after a seven-day notice issued earlier by its parent body expired. Ahead of the shutdown, workers have been told to show up at their offices on Monday, May 11, and Tuesday, May 12, wearing red clothing or red armbands to demonstrate unity.
“From Wednesday, May 13, members are to completely halt work until their demands are addressed. “You will rise from your beds and return to them, until further notice, and until our just demands are met,” part of the statement read.
The union also urged members to stay united and obey the directive, saying the strike will continue until their grievances are resolved. Regional officials have been tasked with ensuring compliance in their areas.
Signed by Divisional Chairman Francis Bangfudeme Nyuzaghl and Assistant Divisional Secretary Godsway Ayivor Bismark, the statement declared: “No retreat, no surrender until victory.” If the dispute isn’t settled, the action is likely to disrupt operations at NIA registration centres nationwide, affecting services such as Ghana Card registration, replacements, and updates.
