The Minority caucus in Parliament has pledged to block any government move to impose new taxes and levies, arguing that Ghanaians are already battling tough economic conditions and cannot take on more financial strain.
The caucus stated its stance during a media briefing held by Parliament’s leadership on Friday, May 22, where members spoke on several economic and governance matters.
Speaking for the caucus, the Deputy Minority Leader, Patricia Appiagyei, slammed the government over what she called inconsistencies in the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) position on taxation since taking office in January 2025.
She said while the Minority backs the need for better fiscal discipline and lower state spending, the steps taken so far have not delivered the relief many Ghanaians expected.
According to her, although the government has unveiled reforms to curb waste and tighten economic management, rollout has been slow and mostly symbolic, with little effect on the everyday struggles of ordinary citizens.
Patricia Appiagyei further argued that the current economic situation requires policies that reduce pressure on households and businesses instead of adding taxes and levies that could worsen existing hardship.
“The Minority welcomes genuine efforts to cut waste, but reforms so far appear too slow and largely cosmetic. Ghanaians are taxed enough and the Minority reiterates its firm position of no new taxes on an already burdened citizenry.
“It must be placed on record that the NDC, while in opposition, vehemently opposed some taxes, yet has introduced its own levies in government, which contradicts its promise.”
