The Ghana High Commission in Pretoria has announced the temporary suspension of registration for its ongoing voluntary repatriation programme for Ghanaians living in South Africa.
In a statement issued on June 1, 2026, the Commission said the suspension will take effect from June 2, 2026, to allow officials sufficient time to process and verify the large volume of applications already received.
According to the High Commission, more than 1,500 Ghanaian nationals have registered under the programme, with screening and verification processes currently underway.
The Commission emphasised that the suspension is only temporary and does not mark the end of the repatriation exercise. It assured prospective applicants who have not yet registered that an additional registration phase will be announced at a later date.
“The date of the next phase for new registration will be communicated in due course,” the statement noted.
The High Commission explained that the pause would enable officials, in collaboration with relevant Home Affairs authorities, to efficiently manage and process the applications already submitted while ensuring an orderly and transparent exercise.
It also expressed gratitude to members of the Ghanaian community in South Africa for their cooperation, patience and understanding throughout the process.
The voluntary repatriation programme was introduced to support Ghanaians in South Africa who wish to return home, with authorities seeking to facilitate a safe, organised and structured return process for all eligible applicants.
