The National Chairman of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP), Nana Ofori Owusu, has called for reforms to Ghana’s asset declaration laws. He wants the declared assets of government appointees to be open to public scrutiny.
This comes after reports claimed nine out of 55 ministers and deputy ministers under President John Dramani Mahama failed to submit their asset declaration forms by the March 31 deadline. The government denied these claims, accusing the media of misreporting.
Nana Ofori Owusu criticised the government’s decision to extend the deadline, saying it encourages complacency. “I didn’t agree with the extension… Because it makes people lax and relaxed about the process,” he said.
He also wants the law reviewed to make asset declarations public documents. “When you declare your assets, it is sealed. You and I cannot see it. It must be a public document,” he argued. This, he believes, would promote transparency and accountability.
“If you came into office with one house and suddenly have 10 houses, these things must be questioned,” he added.
