Adwoa Safo Denies Gun Claims

Former Member of Parliament for Dome-Kwabenya, Sarah Adwoa Safo

Former Dome-Kwabenya lawmaker Sarah Adwoa Safo has firmly rejected circulating claims that she was armed or fired a weapon during a violent altercation at a residence belonging to her brother in Kwabenya.

Speaking to journalists in a private exchange while receiving medical attention following the episode, she declared: “I do not possess a firearm, I did not discharge one, and I would never do so.” Her rebuttal comes against a backdrop of dueling narratives surrounding the confrontation that unfolded on June 21, 2026, at the home of her younger sibling, Israel Kwadwo Safo—widely known as Akofena—which is situated within the wider leadership tussle affecting the Kristo Asafo Mission.

Adwoa Safo pushed back against insinuations that she arrived at the premises with hostile intentions, maintaining that her presence was purely familial. She emphasised that she came unaccompanied and without any security detail, characterising the visit as a private domestic matter rather than an aggressive showdown.

She further contested media accounts claiming she rammed her vehicle into the property’s gate prior to the shooting, challenging assertions that her car bore collision marks, arguing instead that any damage resulted from gunfire. The former minister for Gender, Children and Social Protection voiced bewilderment over what she termed distorted versions of events, specifically refuting allegations that she was equipped with a weapon.

Her statements followed a rejoinder from the Kristo Asafo Mission, which disputed reports that she had been struck by bullets. The church maintained that no shots were aimed in her direction, and alleged instead that she drove into the entrance barriers following a religious gathering, causing property damage and endangering congregants present. According to the church’s version, security teams intervened to avert a larger escalation, and it appealed to the public to await verified findings as inquiries proceed.

The episode, marked by sharply conflicting testimonies, is rooted in an ongoing succession battle within the Kristo Asafo Mission after the passing of its founder, Apostle Professor Kwadwo Safo. In the wake of the incident, the Ghana Police Service confirmed the detention of Israel Safo and two other individuals to aid investigations. Authorities reported that a search uncovered firearms, ammunition, and filled magazines, with the suspects subsequently facing charges related to unlawful possession and use of offensive weapons, as well as causing malicious damage. All accused have been released on bail by the court as legal proceedings move forward, with the case slated to resume pending further probes into both the shooting and the deeper factional dispute.
