The Judicial Service of Ghana is set to introduce an artificial intelligence-powered judicial assistant for judges and magistrates across the country, marking one of the most significant technological advancements in Africa’s justice sector.

The initiative, developed through a partnership between Kwame AI and the Judicial Service, will provide all 445 judges and magistrates with access to Eskwai Clerk, an AI-driven tool designed to support legal research, document analysis and the drafting of rulings and judgments.

According to Kwame AI, the platform aims to improve efficiency within the courts, streamline judicial processes and help reduce delays in case management while ensuring that all judicial decisions remain under the full control and supervision of judges.

The company explained that Eskwai Clerk will enable judicial officers to access legal resources more quickly and manage increasing caseloads more effectively. This comes at a time when Ghana’s courts continue to face growing demands, with a relatively small number of judicial officers serving a population of more than 35 million people.

Kwame AI noted that Ghana’s judge-to-population ratio remains significantly higher than those of countries such as Canada and the United States, placing additional pressure on the justice delivery system.

Speaking on the initiative, Kwame AI Co-founder, Jojo Boateng, said the partnership reflects ongoing efforts to leverage technology to enhance the administration of justice in Ghana.

He added that the rollout builds on the company’s previous collaboration with the Legal Aid Commission, which focused on improving access to justice through artificial intelligence solutions.

Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie described the introduction of the AI assistant as a major milestone in the judiciary’s modernization agenda, emphasizing that technology should serve as a complement to human expertise rather than a substitute for it.

“Embracing technology within our judicial processes transcends mere efficiency; it is fundamentally about ensuring that justice is both accessible and expeditious for all citizens of Ghana,” he said.

He further described the deployment of Eskwai Clerk as a transformative step toward a modern judiciary where technology strengthens the rule of law and enhances the delivery of justice.

As part of the implementation process, judges and magistrates will undergo training to ensure the responsible and effective use of the AI system. The Judicial Service stressed that the platform will function strictly as a support tool, with judicial discretion and decision-making remaining exclusively in the hands of human judges.
