President John Dramani Mahama has expressed that he was optimistic that Ghana and the United States (US) will further strengthen their historic alliance as America marks 250 years of independence.
In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, President Dramani Mahama sent Ghana’s best wishes to the US Government and its citizens, calling the anniversary a moment to reaffirm the lasting bond between both nations.
In his note to US President Donald J. Trump, President Dramani Mahama expressed confidence that bilateral relations will keep growing, anchored on mutual dedication to democratic governance, respect for the rule of law, human rights and shared economic growth.
“As we celebrate yet another major landmark, I firmly believe that the long-standing friendship and collaboration between our nations will continue to be guided by common values and interests, particularly in upholding the rule of law, protecting human rights and democracy and pursuing the economic progress that cements a strong and lasting partnership between Ghana and the United States,” he stated.
The Ministry stated that Ghana and the United States have enjoyed friendly diplomatic ties since Ghana gained independence in 1957. Cooperation has covered commerce, investment, infrastructure, education and cultural exchange.
The statement pointed to major highlights in the partnership, including joint work on the Akosombo Dam, VALCO, the Millennium Challenge Compact, AGOA, and ongoing collaboration in social development.
The Ministry also referenced years of senior-level exchanges. Former US Presidents Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama have all visited Ghana, while Ghanaian presidents have made official trips to the United States over the years.
President Dramani Mahama ended his message by wishing the US Government and people a peaceful, celebratory and successful 250th Independence Day.
