A Ghanaian TikToker, Camilla Alhassan, has been given a one-year prison term by the Accra Circuit Court after she pleaded guilty to disruptive behaviour and spreading fake information.
The judgment was delivered on Thursday, July 16. Camilla Alhassan admitted in court to posting videos that made baseless claims that President John Dramani Mahama had sacrificed 32 cows in rituals to secure victory in the 2024 general elections.
Following the verdict, her attorney, Kwadwo Gyamfi Bonsu, stated that the court dismissed the charge of misuse of electronic communication, saying it lacked the power to rule on that particular offence.
Still, the court found Camilla guilty of offensive conduct and handed her a 12-month jail sentence. The lawyer explained that the defence team asked for a reduced penalty.
However, the judge said that because such cases were becoming more common, a strong punishment was needed to serve as a warning to others.
The clips went viral online and prompted her arrest and trial by the Ghana Police Service. Prior to the sentencing, the court had also directed that a pregnancy test be carried out during a previous sitting.
