The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA), together with the Ghana Police Service and National Security, has confiscated cigarette-shaped sweets being sold at Makola Market in Accra.
The swoop was carried out after complaints and social media posts flagged the sale of the product on the local market.
In a Facebook post on Saturday, August 29, the FDA confirmed the seizure and said one person was arrested in connection with the sale.
According to the Authority, the display and promotion of tobacco and tobacco-related products is banned under the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851) and the Tobacco Control Regulations, 2016 (L.I. 2247).
It noted that the laws forbid advertising and depiction of tobacco and related products in the media and at points of sale.
The FDA said the exercise is part of its mandate to ensure that regulated products on the Ghanaian market are safe for consumers.
It assured the public of its resolve to continue clamping down on products and practices that violate public health and regulatory standards.
