Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has praised the Dagbon Traditional Council for sustaining the Peace Accord after the death of Ya-Na Abukari II.
He gave the commendation when he visited the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi on Saturday, August 29, to commiserate with the Regent of Dagbon, Kampakuya Naa Yakubu Abukari II, as well as chiefs, elders and people of Dagbon.
Akufo-Addo said he was encouraged that the Regent and senior traditional leaders have resolved to uphold the Peace Accord, which stipulates the selection of a successor to the late Ya-Na through rotation between the Abudu and Andani royal gates.
He noted that peace in Dagbon is crucial not just for the traditional area, but for the stability and development of northern Ghana and the nation at large.
He also eulogised the late Ya-Na, describing him as a friend whose reign brought peace and progress to Dagbon.
“I am strongly encouraged by the decision of the Regent and senior traditional figures of Dagbon to uphold the Peace Accord, which has enshrined the time-tested traditions of Dagbon in selecting, through the principle of rotation, a worthy successor to Ya-Na Abukari II.
The peace of Dagbon is important not only to the people of Dagbon, but also to the peace, stability and development of the entire Northern sector and Ghana as a whole,” he said.
Ya-Na Abukari II passed away in July 2026, after which Kampakuya Naa Yakubu Abukari II was enskinned as Regent in line with Dagbon custom.
