Residents of Ketu South in the Volta Region will stage a peaceful demonstration on September 1, 2026, over what they describe as persistent overbilling and faulty meters by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).
The protest, organised by concerned ECG customers, is to highlight what they say are unfair billing practices and delays in addressing customer complaints.
Convener Edem Mensah Viglo told the Ghana News Agency that residents have endured outrageous estimated bills without actual meter readings, unexplained overcharges, delays in replacing faulty meters and poor responses to complaints.
“Our demonstration is under the theme ‘Enough Is Enough! Stop the Over-Billing Now!’ We are calling for immediate action to ensure that electricity bills are based strictly on accurate meter readings, for those who have been wrongly charged to receive appropriate adjustments to their accounts,” he said.
He said the group was demanding transparency and accountability from ECG and respect for consumers’ rights.
The demonstration will start at Denu Junction and proceed to the Ketu South Municipal Assembly before ending at the ECG office in Denu, where a petition will be presented.
“The over-billing had led to the collapse of many personal businesses in the area; it has also contributed to a rise in the unemployment rate within the Municipality, since many cannot afford the high bills by ECG,” Viglo said.
He said the Assembly, ECG and other authorities had been notified about the concerns but had taken no meaningful action. He cited cases of households receiving bills while disconnected for months and homes with only a single bulb billed between GH¢2,000 and GH¢5,000, with some customers billed close to GH¢20,000 in a few months.
Security agencies have been notified to ensure order during the protest, which organisers say is about justice, dignity and consumer rights.
Meanwhile, the Energy Minister, Dr John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced an independent probe into alleged overbilling and faulty meters in parts of the Volta Region, including Keta, to be conducted by the PURC and the Energy Commission.
