Mahama Charges New Justices To Uphold Constitution

President John Dramani Mahama has charged three new Supreme Court judges to anchor their rulings in the Constitution and stay firm amid political pressure and public outcry.

He noted that the justices will handle cases that stir political divisions and intense public feelings and must therefore remain impartial and guided strictly by the law.

“Let the Constitution remain your compass,” President Mahama said during the swearing-in ceremony held on Thursday, September 10, 2026.

He cautioned them against letting litigants, governments or state institutions shape how they will be remembered on the bench.

“You will sometimes be called upon to decide matters that generate strong public emotions and competing political interests.

In those moments, you must remain unmoved by the pressures, the praise, or the criticism,” the President stated.

President Mahama said their time on the apex court should be judged by the soundness of their legal reasoning, the fairness of their judgments and their fidelity to the Constitution.

“Do not allow yourselves to be defined by the individuals, governments, or institutions that appear before you. Let the quality of your reasoning define your legacy, the fairness of your decisions, and your unwavering loyalty to the Constitution,” he added.

The President also reminded them that their rulings affect real lives, as the rights, livelihoods, freedoms and future of Ghanaians may hinge on their decisions.

“Remember, always, that behind every case file are human beings whose rights, livelihoods, freedoms, and futures may depend upon your judgment,” he said.

The new justices, Justice Sophia Rosetta Bernasko-Essah, Justice Edward Amoako Asante and private legal practitioner Anthony Forson Jnr., took the oath of office after securing parliamentary approval.

President Mahama further urged them to serve with humility, patience and courage, to thoroughly interrogate the law, and to let justice and the national interest lead their work.
