The Minority Caucus in Parliament has ended their brief boycott and returned to the House after protesting the GHC50 million bail condition imposed on NPP’s Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako (Chairman Wontumi). Wontumi has been in custody since May 27 following his arrest by the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) over alleged financial malfeasance.
Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin had led a walkout on May 29, condemning the bail conditions as excessively stringent and politically motivated. However, the caucus returned to Parliament on May 30 to participate in proceedings, suggesting possible behind-the-scenes negotiations or reassurances that eased tensions.
Deputy Attorney General Justice Srem-Sai confirmed that Wontumi is under investigation for serious criminal offenses, including fraud, causing financial loss to the state, and money laundering, with asset recovery efforts underway.
