Veteran Nigerian actor and film executive Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, has died at the age of 84.
His son, Olusoji Jacobs, announced his death in an Instagram post on Wednesday.
“It is with gratitude to God for a life well lived and fought, that we announce the passing of our dear husband, father, grandfather and uncle. The Lion of Lufodo,” he wrote.
Mr Jacobs also appealed to bloggers and social media influencers to respect the family’s privacy as they mourn.
Olu Jacobs was one of Nigeria’s most celebrated veteran actors, with a career spanning theatre, television and film.
He trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London and began his acting career in British television before appearing in several international productions. He later returned to Nigeria, where he established himself as a major figure in the country’s film industry.
Jacobs went on to feature in numerous Nigerian films and became known for his commanding performances and versatility. His contributions to the industry earned him several honours, including the Industry Merit Award at the Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards and a Lifetime Achievement Award at the Africa International Film Festival.
Beyond acting, Jacobs was also a film executive. Together with his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, he was involved in the Lufodo Group and contributed to the development of Nigeria’s performing arts industry.
His death marks the loss of one of Nigeria’s most influential figures in theatre and film, whose career helped shape generations of African screen and stage performers.
