More than 900 people were killed in road crashes across Ghana between January and August 2026, according to figures from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD).

The eight-month period recorded about 9,000 crashes involving approximately 15,000 vehicles, with some 11,000 people sustaining varying degrees of injury.

The Director of Research, Education and Training at the MTTD, ACP Alexander Obeng, described the crashes as preventable and said the figures underscore the scale of Ghana’s road safety challenge.

“Between January and August, we can report that we have recorded about 9,000 preventable crashes involving about 15,000 vehicles of all categories and models, with about 11,000 Ghanaians having sustained various degrees of injury as a result of these preventable crashes,” he said.

Speaking on Channel One TV on Monday, September 28, ACP Obeng stressed the need for greater responsibility among motorists and other road users to reduce crashes and fatalities.

He said addressing the problem would require a combination of proactive and reactive interventions.

According to him, sustained road safety education remains crucial to preventing crashes, while effective response measures are also needed to minimise their impact when they occur.

ACP Obeng called for continued efforts to protect motorists, passengers and pedestrians as authorities work to reduce the number of deaths and injuries recorded on the country’s roads.
