The government is set to construct new landfill facilities in the Greater Accra and Eastern Regions as part of efforts to manage rising waste volumes, the Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Mahama Ayariga, has revealed.
According to Mr Ayariga, the move has become imperative because current dump sites are overstretched. He disclosed that the Kpone landfill has reached full capacity and is now earmarked for decommissioning.
Speaking on Eyewitness News on Monday, September 29, 2026, which was monitored by Ghanaianradar, he said: “We have plans to construct new landfill sites across the Greater Accra area and Eastern Region to accommodate the waste that is being generated.
The Kpone landfill site, as you can see, is full. So we’re in the process of planning its decommissioning.
”The Minister explained that the absence of engineered landfill sites in certain locations forced the relocation of waste from Agbogbloshie to another site.
He further indicated that government is considering more sustainable waste management options, such as incineration and waste-to-energy technologies.
“I agree that there are new ideas about how to manage waste such as incineration and the conversion of waste to energy through burning it and then using the heat to generate energy,” Mr Ayariga noted, adding that talks are already underway on adopting such systems.
“I have had those; even this morning I was in a meeting discussing how we should do that as a country,” he said.
Mr Ayariga stressed that government intends to shift from mere dumping to making productive use of waste as part of its long-term strategy.
