More than 3,000 residents have been displaced by severe flooding in the Hohoe Municipality of the Volta Region after the River Dayi overflowed its banks, affecting more than 400 homes.
Several communities along the river have been hit by the floods, with Zongo among the worst affected. More than half of the community is reported to have been submerged, forcing hundreds of residents to abandon their homes.
Displaced residents have been moved to temporary shelters, including classrooms, while local authorities work to secure more suitable accommodation for them.
The scale of the disaster has placed significant pressure on the Hohoe Municipal Assembly and other local authorities, prompting an appeal for assistance from individuals, organisations and other stakeholders.
Speaking on Channel One TV on Monday, September 28, the Member of Parliament for Hohoe, Thomas Worlanyo Tsekpo, said the situation had overwhelmed the resources available to local authorities.
“It’s overwhelming. The MP and the MCE alone cannot, in fact, we are not able to. We are calling for support,” he said.
Mr Tsekpo commended the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and security agencies for assisting in the evacuation of residents from vulnerable areas.
According to him, their intervention has helped prevent casualties as floodwaters spread through affected communities.
Despite the heavy rainfall subsiding, Mr Tsekpo said water levels were continuing to rise, leaving the situation fluid and increasing the need for sustained emergency assistance.
Authorities are continuing efforts to protect residents, provide temporary accommodation and respond to the immediate needs of those displaced by the flooding.
